what to pack for law school (school supply version)
I think law school attracts a particular kind of person. I went to my local Office Max and while perusing the pen section, I noticed that the girl standing next to me was debating between four packs of pens. Her expression was genuinely pensive.
I pounced on the opportunity to share my expertise on pens. I asked, “Need help deciding? Can’t decide on one?”
Apparently, the Girl was deep in her thoughts because it took her a while before she responded, “No, I’m thinking about how many of each I need for law school.”
Mentally, I noted that this was an interesting development. We had a brief discussion of our unhealthy obsession with school supplies and she left with 2 packs of pens, one was her all-time favorite (Bic Velocity) and the other was my suggestion (Zebra Z Grip).
For kicks, here’s what I’m thinking of bringing to law school. Most of this stuff is laying around my house somewhere, but making this list was a swell reminder that I need to go to Office Max. Again.

Am I missing anything?

Correction fluid?
Not sure if you actually need this though.=)
I put down white out on the list because I couldn’t think of a better word. And you nailed it. Thanks– I am probably paranoid but if we need to fill out important forms with pen…correction fluid to the rescue!
I am glad to be of help! Wow! Law school sounds “interesting”. I am also planning to take up Law but my mind is still clouded…
Have a great day! =)))
Hi. I’m a random person you don’t know, and I can’t remember how I stumbled onto your blog. Anyway, I’m a fellow 0L. Most of what you have on your list is on mine, but I do have a few additions. I’m bringing a few binders, on the advise of a rising 3L friend of mine, and binder clips. Also Post-It flags (the kind you can use to mark a page in a book). I’m not sure if you consider a flash drive to be school supplies or electronics, but I’m bringing one. Or four. I’m also bringing adhesive labels (address, return address, etc.) in various sizes because I like to label things but *hate* the look of handwritten labels.
YES to everything you said. I very much consider flash drives to be part of the school supply list. So essential– it was basically my life blood in college and will probably be the same in law school. I’m really glad to hear that somebody else is also serious about school supplies. I try to not feel small when the elementary kid next to me in line is eyeing my overflowing basket. What I really want to say is, INDEED child, I am using ALL of this stuff. No shame here.
If you don’t have a printer already, check with Wonderland Law School before you go out and buy a new one! While I was going through orientation for my 1L year, I found out that our school provided us with 1,200 free pages per semester. That turned out to be a MAJOR money saver! Also, buy highlighters and index cards in bulk if you can! (:
Holy smokes I did not even consider free printing for law students. Yessss thank you for bringing that up! I probably will bring a printer as a backup in case something happens.
Academic calendar. You think it takes forever to decide on pens? You should’ve seen me at the calendar section of Office Depot for an hour. Yes, I’m old school and needed a paper calendar (one that broke down time slots in 15 min increments from 7 am until 10 pm AND allowed me to see one FULL week at a time). My family thought I was nuts (Just pick one already!!! Geez!!), but it had to be the perfect one. And I was organizationally immobile without my calendar; I could do nothing, plan nothing, confirm nor deny nothing. It is essential.
Ok, that’s my 2cents…. Back to preparing to slay the BEAR!!
LT, I am totally old-school when it comes to planners as well. I MUST have a paper calendar and yes, I spend WAY too much time researching about and flipping through planners. I briefly flirted with google calendar and icalendar during my college days, but I always reverted to the paper one. There’s something unique and magical about manually writing up to-do lists.
In fellowship for planners,
LR
I am SO excited to shop for school supplies. It’s the only thing I’m excited about because everything else has me nervous and freaking out.
Definitely show the items you love the most! I’d love to know your review of items.
Hm…I was actually brainstorming what to write about. I like your idea about reviewing some items that I love to pieces. Thanks for the suggestion and keep your eye out for future reviews
You’re definitely going to want to stock up on flags/tabs for marking your books. If you have any open book classes, or even if you don’t, they are indispensable in helping me review. If your law school is in a college town the surrounding shops will invariably run out of stock in the weeks leading up to exams so buy them now! I like the smaller ones for marking statute books, and and the big Post-It ones w/ lines for taking notes are great for a mini case brief.
Differentiating between flags/tabs by purpose? I’m telling you, I’m already in love with the law school community and I haven’t even started yet!
I like this. I was about three sentences in and now I have ten Amazon tabs open with pens and I’m reading reviews. Safe to say I’m about to spend some money on pens haha.
Glad to hear I have sent another person to pen heaven. Oh dear, I love Amazon and I regularly go there seeking out reviews on everything–laptops, books, writing utensils, backpacks etc etc. Really enjoyed your post on pens too!
Don’t forget to get dropbox and/or google drive. The free accounts should be enough for your files. DropBox is dead easy to use. Every 1L class at least a couple of people lose all their notes/outlines because they didn’t use them. Don’t be one of those.
Do it now, thank me later.
Interesting- I’ve never heard of dropbox so I may need to do some investigating. I actually use google drive regularly because I tend to use different laptops/computers in my house and I can never remember where I saved that one photo or document. Now, I slap everything onto google drive!
